American Psycho

When I was a kid, I used to watch so many horror movies, and at one point a friend and I actually wrote our own slasher flick "script" when we were just in 5th grade. Somehow, despite this love of horror, I never actually watched the original Psycho. I think it was partly because it's so ingrained in popular culture that I felt like I had already seen it before.

This weekend I decided to finally watch it on a grey evening, and was really surprised at how little I really knew about the film. I mean, obviously I knew the shower scene and the score and the ending, but I never really knew much about why Marion Crane ends up at the hotel in the first place, which is what sparks the entire thing. I'm interested to see what happens when I watch some other AFI Top 100 films that I think I know really well but may be surprised by.

I couldn't get over how amazing Anthony Perkins was in that role. It's no wonder his Norman Bates has been near the top of so many "best villains/characters" list; he plays him perfectly.

This has made me want to watch a lot more Hitchcock. Which films do you recommend?

Let's Run

This weekend I did something I never thought I'd do: I ran a 5K in our city's marathon.

My goal was to come in at less than 45 minutes (which I know is pretty slow for a 5K, but I've only been running for a few weeks, so gimme a break!) and I came in at 41:13! I walked a bit more than I wanted/anticipated, but I felt so proud once I crossed the finish line. A few months ago, if you told me I'd be running in a race, I would've probably laughed at you, so I'm really happy with myself that I was able to finish it.

I definitely want to keep running, and my goal is to be able to run a 5K in 30 minutes by the end of the summer. I think I can do it!

If you've been thinking about starting to run but are nervous about it, I highly recommend the Couch-to-5K app. It has been incredibly helpful and has made it a lot easier than expected.

Here's to surprising yourself with what you can accomplish and becoming active!

RIP Andy

One of my bucket list items was to visit Andy's Dummy Farm in New Brunswick, but unfortunately Andy passed away last week. My boyfriend and I had drove past where the farm is supposed to be a few times the last few months but couldn't find it, and it turns out it's because Andy was living in a nursing home.

I hear he was always a riot and very friendly. I wish I could have met him.

Run, Run, Run

One of my goals is to finally get back to a size 7. I think I made that goal when I was a size 9, and I'm now at a size 11-13. And although I'm in no way unhealthy, I just don't feel very good about myself most of the time.

I used to be so active, and then in 8th grade I quit every sport I was involved in when my anxiety got too bad, which led to me becoming really lazy and gaining weight, which got worse when I moved away and started university. I keep telling myself every couple weeks that I'll finally start eating healthier, being more active, etc. and each time I just...don't.

But this year, I was asked to participate in the Blue Nose Marathon for work to help raise money for our education and outreach programs. I thought it was completely unrealistic for me to sign up (even though it's just for the 5K), but I downloaded the Couch-to-5k app and it's been going really well! I have a lot of foot/leg problems, but invested in some great shoes which have really helped and reduced my pain/shin splints quite a bit.

I also decided to start an abs challenge so that I'm also doing a bit more than just cardio.

I'm having a harder time with the healthy eating thing (it's just so much easier not to!), but I feel like I'm heading in the right direction. I've only been working out regularly for a couple weeks, but I've already seen such a difference in my energy levels and my self-confidence.

It'll take some time, but I'm feeling really positive about everything!

The marathon is in two weeks, and I'm still not at the "running 5k without stopping" level, but each day I'm able to do a little more for a little longer, so fingers crossed I'll be good to go on the day of the marathon!

And hey, if you'd like to support me in this race, you can make a donation here. All proceeds will be going to support music education in Halifax. Thanks!
